Lieutenant Commander Tess Kensington rubbed her tired eyes. Her skull throbbed with pain. With the Battle of NOVA Station fresh in her memory, she had desperately needed to blow off some steam, but today was going to be a long day.

Akoskin had dug up a bottle of vodka from somewhere and they had celebrated her promotion long into the night. A little less alcohol and a bit more sleep wouldn't have hurt, Tess concluded. It was difficult to conceal her exhaustion, and Commander Ishida's disapproving gaze made her blush with every yawn. It was barely a day since her promotion! She glanced in the mirror again.

The new insignia on her immaculate uniform looked good. Tess smiled. It would take her to time to grow accustomed to her new title — Lieutenant Commander.

Her colleagues had not begrudged her the promotion in the slightest. The media had been all over Captain Cross, and Kensington did not envy him the attention. Tess had checked the ship's roster. The repairs to the ship's superstructure and core systems would take weeks to complete.

During this time a skeleton crew would remain on board. A big helping of sun, sand and water was just what she needed after the horrors of the last few weeks. But today promised to be another long day and she turned her mind to the present.

The ship's officers were not afraid to get their hands dirty and did their best to assist the repair crews wherever they could. Just as she turned to leave her quarters, the door slid aside without warning. Five security officers stormed into the room, forming a cordon around her.

Following in the footsteps of his men, Alpha entered Kensington's quarters. With his head cocked to one side, the ship's security chief studied her briefly.

Tess looked at Alpha in wide-eyed confusion. He just wanted to lull me into a false sense of security.

What are you talking about? The wafer-thin implant — standard issue for officers — was located on the back of her hand.

A touch interface mounted above the subcutaneous chip strata allowed her to access its diverse functions. I was hoping you could tell me. They were sitting in the cafeteria, where they breakfasted together each morning.

Giulia's comms implant had alerted her to Kensington's arrest mid-way through their meal — one of the engineer's well-informed contacts had spilled the beans. She stepped over to the bulkhead door and flashed her hand at the interface.

A neutral voice responded: Cross nodded. Take a seat — I'm afraid the explanation is rather long-winded. And I don't think you'll like what you're about to hear. It was an uphill battle, but Admiral Santana Pendergast knew that she had to keep herself together.

The Home Fleet had flown one patrol after the next since the President's order that they deploy to the system's periphery. She was still struggling to believe that her almost all of her fellow admirals were dead. Just like that. From one minute to the next. And why?

All because that stupid dog Michalev had chosen to launch a coup d'etat — as the mountain of evidence uncovered by the Secret Service now revealed. Isa Jansen's proximity to the President's inner circle should protect her,she mused. But what about Elias Skolberg? His disappearance was cause for grave concern.

With the Ministry of Internal Affairs scrambling to locate and capture Michalev — with Jansen's support — there was nothing that Santana could do but wait. She glanced over to the captain of her flagship, who was studying the news channel on his console.

He shook his head. His bald head was so polished it reflected the ceiling lights, Pendergast noticed. There's not much left to attack since that shuttle flew into the Senate. And as long as I'm on this ship, he'll never get his hands on the Home Fleet.

I was the first person they looked up. The Home Fleet turning its firepower on Earth is their worst nightmare. Santana was not surprised. Captain Holden was an outstanding officer and Santana would have gladly vouched for his loyalty. The author has developed a storyline that is realistic and full of great sci-fi adventure. It is easy to get into the story because of this realism and not get lost in all the mumbo jumbo science that some authors try to create.

I really enjoyed all the fast action and many plot twist. Wireless: The Essential Charles Stross. Buero Vallejo.

La tragedia, transparencia y cristal de la palabra Spanish Edition. They were realistic and believable. I liked how the plot and the characters grew and came together as the tale progressed.
